Support for Students with Special Needs
The college is sensitive and welcoming to students with special needs. Differently-abled (students with dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s syndrome), LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) and all other students with unique needs will find a respectful and comfortable environment on campus.
A small team of qualified special educators is available on campus to offer academic and personal support. The college has undertaken the initiatives described below to achieve a free and respectful environment for differently-abled students.
Special Students Support Network
The Special Students Support Network (SSSN) is a student committee dedicated to promoting the emotional wellbeing of students, and creating a supportive campus community united against the stigma of mental health issues. The SSSN establishes peer-to-peer support groups in which students can share their struggles with peers in a safe, healthy and confidential environment. Student leaders are trained to lead conversations constructively and in such a way that all aspects of an individual’s identity are respected.
LGBT Resource Center
The LGBT Resource Centre seeks to provide a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to promote and develop programmes centering on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The LGBT Resource Centre provides a comprehensive range of education, information and advocacy services, and works to create and maintain an open, safe and supportive environment for LGBT students, staff, faculty, alumni and the college community.
We provide educational and social programmes, support services and resources intended to:
• Raise awareness regarding LGBT issues.
• Affirm LGBT identities and lives by fostering a safe, inclusive, multicultural environment for the university’s LGBT community.
• Support the academic mission of NSIC by promoting the inclusion of LGBT topics in the curriculum and other academic programmes.
• Build links with other LGBT organisations and allied programmes through outreach and community development efforts.
